Today marks the 20th World Book Day which celebrates books and promotes a love of reading. In Our Lady’s we had a visit from author Alicia. L. Wright yesterday and held a book swap in the library today. But what about children who struggle to read so don’t have access to all the opportunities that books open up?

Year 11 student Devon Gordon wants to do her bit to help. As part of her involvement with The Girl Guide Society she has been selecting to take part in an incredible international volunteering opportunity and education programme to improve the reading culture in young children. Devon was one of 40 girls to go through a selection process to choose girls to go on three different international trips – to Zambia, India and Armenia.

During the selection process, Devon took part in various tasks including teamwork to put a map together and cooking tasks which required the girls to cook traditional dishes from the countries they had a chance to visit. Despite the dish not being to Devon’s taste she said they discussed respecting cultures and not being rude about the food they eat. The girls were also asked to think about fundraising ideas for the trips.

Devon has been selected to visit Zambia for two weeks at the end of July! To raise fund for this important educational visit she is holding a fashion show at Our Lady’s on Monday evening. Ex Our Lady’s pupil Scott Lynch and his partner run the fashion company who are hosting the show. High street fashion labels will be showcased and will be available to buy with discounts of up to 75%! As the models show off the outfits, runners will be on hand to get the items you’re interested in for you to try on. Both cash and card payments will be accepted.

There will be refreshments and you purchase raffle tickets to be in with a chance of winning vouchers to spend during the evening.
