Ending the Academic Year on a High!

What a year at Our Lady’s. We started back last September riding high on the success of our fantastic GCSE results and from then on things have continued to go from strength-to-strength. As a school we are immensely proud to have secured our ‘Good’ Ofsted result back in February which was a culmination of plenty of hard work and is testament to the ongoing commitment and dedication of a unified team of staff as well as the great performance, behaviour and attitude of our students.

As a city we were rocked by the appalling events at the Manchester arena, but the reaction of our school community in the aftermath of such a heinous attack demonstrated the courage, strength and compassion that make us the cohesive and welcoming environment we are. Our students channelled their shock and grief into creative work that included some beautiful creative poetry.

The summer term is always a busy one and this term has been no exception. With sports days, exams, school trips and year six pupils visiting us for transition week there has been plenty going on each week. And it is in this busy setting that our students flourish and fulfill their potential. So, after months of studying for their GCSE exams it was wonderful to see our year 11s arriving at the Ashton Moss Village Hotel dressed to impress. The Leavers’ Prom was certainly a night to remember with staff and students receiving a host of awards before an evening of dancing and socialising saw everyone making the most of the chance to celebrate a productive and memorable last year at Our Lady’s.

We wish all our leavers luck for their exam results in August, look forward to welcoming them back to school for their Certificate Evening in the autumn and are confident they have a bright future. It is not just our year 11s who have achieved great things this year. Our Affirmation Assembly and Concert on 13 July provided the perfect opportunity to congratulate our brilliantly gifted students and showcase some of their incredible work celebrating their exceptional talents and achievements. The evening began with an exhibition from technology with art and photography displayed in the foyer. There followed an Affirmation Assembly, buffet and then the impressive summer concert.

Our Summer Fair, organised by Mrs Newey in support of The British heart Foundation was also a huge success, despite the good old British weather not playing ball in terms of sunshine! There were a range of stalls, craft activities, fun and games including a bouncy castle and tin-can alley. Visitors could decorate hearts, have their hair braided and get henna tattoos. A Vintage Café served prosecco, tea, coffee and cake.

Our Lady’s’ dance team performed in the school hall before Middleton Rapper Kris Evans took to the stage. Kris has previously appeared on Britain’s Got Talent and took the opportunity to promote his new single. Outside there was an ice cream van, a Turkish banquet and the chance to ‘Splat a Teacher’ – something that was surprisingly popular! The ‘special guest’ was Chase from Paw Patrol who caused quite a stir with some of the younger visitors.

Today was the annual Our Lady’s trip to Blackpool so despite the rain putting in another appearance it certainly wasn’t dampening spirits as staff and students boarded the coaches to head for a day of fun at The Pleasure Beach. The sunshine eventually broke through and a great time was had by all.

So, as another academic year at Our Lady’s draws to a close, we break up tomorrow for the summer holidays in high spirits and positive of what lies ahead.

Have a great summer!
