History is a highly popular subject at Our Lady’s, inspiring pupils to explore the past and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. As an academic subject, History develops valuable research, critical thinking, evaluation and analytical skills, providing pupils with a strong foundation for further study at A Level and university.

We are a caring and dedicated department, committed to providing a diverse, stimulating and challenging curriculum. We aim to foster a genuine love of History at every key stage, encouraging pupils to ask questions, consider different perspectives and understand how the events of the past have shaped the modern world.

At Our Lady’s, our three-year Key Stage 3 History curriculum develops pupils’ chronological understanding from the Norman Conquest in 1066 through to the modern world. Pupils study a broad range of engaging topics, including 1066 and the year of change, colonialism and empire, and the First and Second World Wars. Throughout the curriculum, pupils develop their ability to analyse historical evidence, understand cause and consequence, and explain change and continuity over time. We also believe that History is best brought to life through experiences beyond the classroom. As part of their studies, pupils have the opportunity to visit places of historical significance and engage with the past first-hand, for example Imperial War museum North.

At Key Stage 4, we currently follow the AQA GCSE History specification. Pupils study a fascinating and varied range of topics, including:

• Elizabethan England, c1568–1603

• Health and the People, c1000 to the present day

• Conflict and Tension: The Interwar Years, 1918–1939

• Germany, 1890–1945: Democracy and Dictatorship

Through our History curriculum, we seek to develop knowledgeable, curious and thoughtful young people who appreciate the complexity of the past and understand its relevance to the world in which they live.
