Young Carers
Are you a young carer?
A young carer is defined as a young person aged 18 or under who has significant responsibility in looking after and/or supporting a loved one who has an illness, disability, mental health condition, drug or alcohol problem. Although Young Carers are usually identified as a young person taking care of a loved one in their family home, some cases may differ from this definition as some could be looking after and/or supporting a loved one outside of their family home. The specific types of responsibilities a Young Carer may have can vary and be more long term or on a shorter time scale, and can be looking after/supporting their loved one physically and/or emotionally.
Some of the key responsibilities of a Young Carer could be:
- Practical tasks, such as cooking and completing household chores
- Providing personal care, such as helping someone getting washed, dressed and/or administering medication.
- Emotional support such as accompanying with GP appointments.
- Looking after younger siblings or younger loved ones.
- Managing or supporting with household finances
- Supporting in communication needs (e.g. interpreting for non-English speakers)
